Today sees the launch of the company’s latest attempt to turn that situation around: “Open Deezer,” a new set of APIs for iOS, Android and Java-based web apps, which it hopes will help it bring on a new raft of developers to create music services around its platform.

The move underscores Deezer’s need to ramp up its offering to make it more dynamic, specifically in the face of competition from Spotify, which has been offering APIs since last year and now has a few dozen apps available on its platform.

“We know we don’t have a monopoly on great ideas,” Daniel Marhely, the founder and CTO of Deezer, said in a statement. “There is still so much we can create to enhance people’s music experience.”

The APIs give developers not only access to the Deezer catalog of 15 million tracks and related metadata, but also Deezer’s HTML5-based music streaming technology, which can be used without downloading a desktop client (unlike Spotify, until recently).

Developers also get “user data” access but it’s unclear whether that’s simply a case of user profiles or a wider look at analytics around what that user has consumed.

And although he wouldn’t share any numbers, CEO Jeff Weiner said adoption of the recently launched iPad app has exceeded the company’s “aggressive” expectations. Weiner mentioned the iPad app again when asked about the areas where the company is strongest right now.

But one analyst asked: Is that entirely a good thing? Since LinkedIn (and other Web companies) have been slower to monetize on mobile, could the shift actually hurt the company’s revenue? Weiner argued that it should be “accretive” because “our intention is to bring all of our business lines into the mobile environment.” That means premium members should get premium access on the mobile app, and yes, it also means mobile advertising.

Weiner has already talked about his plans to bring ads to the app, but he offered a few more details today. For the iPad app, the ads will probably resemble those already found on the website. On the other hand, since smartphones have less screen real estate, the company will be experimenting with custom ad types designed specifically for the iPhone and Android, such as promoting companies to follow or posting relevant ads in the news stream.

That makes it one of the top five social networking sites globally according to comScore, and its growth is being significantly powered by mobile (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and WAP worldwide). In the U.S. market it’s seeing more new registrations on mobile than on Web, with 68% of new users coming to the site via mobile over the past six months. A health check to these figures is that while mobile is starting to surpass web in the U.S., the global averages would be much lower of course.

Mobile usage has grown by 100% since November 2011, and Badoo says is it more than doubling mobile revenues. The fact that it is monetizing mobile may be of interest to Facebook, which seems to have a terrible time on this front – a third of Facebook’s traffic is mobile but it’s not monetised. Then again, it is over five times bigger.

Badoo’s iPhone app which comes with in-app payments designed to boost your popularity with packs of credits. You literally pay to become more popular and get more visibility in the network. In-app payments are a gift to Badoo, which in the early days used premium SMS as a way for users to supercharge their visibility on the network.

U.S. growth is also being powered by mobile and according to app tracker Distimo Badoo’s Android app is now one of the top 10 most popular apps (No. 7) for social networking, up from 35 in November 2011, while its iPhone app is now a top 25 social networking app, up from No. 60 late last year. AppAnnie says Badoo is regularly a top 5 grossing iPhone app.

Badoo says it is growing in New York (where Badoo just launched its first advertising campaign), Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and other cities.

This is helped by a marketing campaign that they are running in the U.S. right now – the first time they’ve ever done anything proactive like that.

The company has released some further numbers to us exclusively, verified by comScore.

These indicate that Badoo has seen over 60% growth year on year with 35 million active users per month worldwide, adding 150,000 new users a day. While Southern Europe and Latin America continue to show strong growth, the U.S., UK, Germany and Russia are growing fast. Badoo was usually strong in Russia and Latin America, but the addition of these developed markets shows Facebook isn’t satisfying everyone’s needs by any stretch.

Badoo is still in profit and has an annual run rate of $150 million. It’s also winning big hitters such as former Google executive Benjamin Ling who was recently appointed Chief Operating Officer.

Andrey Andreev, founder of Badoo, has a different view on social networking to Zuckerberg, who obsesses over sharing. Badoo, says Andreev, is about making it “as easy as possible to bring people together, so they can chat, make friends, date and have fun. And there is a massive opportunity to do this on a global scale.”

And he has big supporters out there.

Shervin Pishevar, Menlo Ventures comments: “Badoo is proof there is a huge global opportunity, and appetite, for using social and mobile tools to connect with new people. And for those tools to work at scale. Importantly, they make the experience fun, easy and fast, so it’s incredibly compelling to a mainstream audience.”

Loïc Le Meur, CEO of LeWeb, says “Badoo’s viral spread from Europe to Latin America, and now to the US, shows the amazing potential of Europe’s tech scene.”

Microsoft  shares were 3.1% higher at $31.98. The company reported fiscal third-quarter earnings were $5.11 billion, or 60 cents a share, on $17.41 billion in revenue, with revenue reflecting improvement in sales of the company’s Windows and business-division products. Analysts had expected the company to earn 58 cents a share on $17.16 billion in revenue. Read more about Microsoft’s results.

AMD  shares gained 1.6% to $8.10 as the chip maker’s adjusted earnings of 12 cents a share beat expectations of 9 cents a share. Revenue was $1.59 billion, down from $1.61 billion, but better than the $1.56 billion that was expected, on average, by analysts. The company swung to a first-quarter loss of $590 million, or 80 cents a share. A year ago, The company made $510 million in profit or 68 cents a share.

AMD also said it expects second-quarter revenue to rise 3% on a sequential basis — plus or minus 3% — which translates to a range of about $1.59 billion to $1.69 billion. Analysts were expecting revenue of $1.59 billion. Read about AMD’s latest figures.

At the same time, shares of SanDisk Corp.  stretched losses, falling 13% to $35.08 after the flash-memory maker’s quarterly revenue forecast came in below Wall Street’s target. On its conference call late Thursday, the company said it expects second-quarter revenue to come in at $1 billion, plus or minus $50 million. By that measure, the range between $950 million to $1.05 billion is below the consensus estimate of $1.29 billion.

SanDisk’s first-quarter adjusted earnings fell short of expectations. It said in a statement that results were hurt by lower-than-expected pricing and demand weakness in certain segments, “and we expect similar trends in the second quarter as well.” See more on SanDisk’s results.

Stock in Tempur-Pedic International Inc.  was pushed 13% lower at $72.71 as the mattress maker’s first-quarter sales missed expectations. Read more on Tempur-Pedic’s results.

Also logging double-digit losses, shares of Extreme Networks Inc.  slid 17% to $3.59 after the networking-equipment company said its fiscal third-quarter results will miss its expectations. It also cut its full-year forecast. See story on results, forecast from Extreme Networks.

Ahead of the evening session, U.S. stocks declined. The Dow Jones Industrial Average  ended back under 13,000 as growing unease about Europe’s debt crisis and mixed economic data offset positive corporate results. Read about Thursday’s action in U.S. stocks.

The Dow industrials fell 69 points, or 0.5%, to 12,964.10. The S&P 500 Index  slipped 0.6% to 1,376.92 and the Nasdaq Composite Index  dropped 0.8% to 3,007.56.

The Lumia 900, by contrast, will come packed with some of Nokia’s best hardware. The phone will have a 4.3-inch ClearBlack Amoled display, an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera lens, and a higher capacity 1830 mAh battery. The phone will be available in matte black and cyan blue, while a white version will hit the market on April 22.

Airtime now has a website and a Facebook sign-up button for early access. And it is hiring.

The jobs listed on the homepage are all engineering positions — yet one more testament, if one was needed, of the big drive right now to look for good technical talent (and, as some believe,  the lack of it on the ground). The positions Airtime is looking to fill are software engineer, web UI engineer, test engineer and operations engineer.

“Our small team shares a passion for using the latest video technology to bring people together,” the company writes. But there is still precious little info on the site about what Airtime will actually do.
